Welcome to Walter’s Tavern

Where classic pub spirit meets the breathtaking beauty of Queenstown.

Steeped in local history and brimming with character, Walter’s Tavern brings the charm of a traditional tavern into the heart of the Post Office Precinct — a place where locals and visitors alike gather for good food, great company, and unforgettable moments.

Overlooking Horne Creek and the Village Green, Walter’s offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere that flows seamlessly between its cozy interiors and spacious outdoor deck — one of the sunniest spots in Queenstown. Whether you’re here for a hearty meal, a few drinks with mates, or live entertainment, Walter’s Tavern delivers the perfect balance of comfort and energy.

Located in a three-level heritage building completed in 2006, Walter’s Tavern is part of Queenstown’s iconic Post Office Precinct — an area that’s long served as a community hub. The neighbouring Post Office building, constructed in the 1930s, remains a proud historical landmark.

Outside the venue, a plaque pays tribute to the legacy of the site — telling the story of how stonemasons John Routledge and Bill Smoothy spent six months shaping greywacke stone from a massive rock in Lake Wakatipu to build the original Post Office. When the precinct was redeveloped in 2009, some of that same stone was reused and can still be seen in the planter outside Walter’s today — a tangible link between Queenstown’s past and present.

A Local Favourite

Walter’s Tavern is a Queenstown staple — a place where live music, cold beer, and good company always come together.

We proudly pour a wide selection of local and international beers on tap, alongside a curated wine and cocktail list. Our menu celebrates the best of pub dining — generous, hearty, and made to share. From classic favourites to modern comfort dishes, it’s all about fresh flavour and friendly service.

Catch the latest live sport on our big screens, enjoy live music by the fireplace, or soak up the sunshine on our outdoor deck overlooking Horne Creek. Families, groups, and solo adventurers are all welcome — and our mezzanine level is perfect for larger gatherings and celebrations.

Queenstown’s Spirit, Bottled and Poured

Queenstown’s story began with explorer and sheep farmer William Gilbert Rees, who settled here in 1860 before the gold rush transformed the region. His pioneering energy still defines the town today — a world-class destination where adventure and hospitality go hand in hand.

From lake cruises and ski slopes to jet boats and bungy jumps, Queenstown is the adventure capital of the world. And Walter’s Tavern is the perfect spot to start your day, share stories of your adventures, or wind down with a cold pint and great food.

With family friendly dining, big screen sport, and live music on stage, the pub really does cater for all.

Enjoy live music by the fireplace, sip on a variety of local and imported beers on tap, indulge in classic British pub fare and soak up the fun, relaxed atmosphere that keeps both locals and visitors coming back for more.

A Queenstown icon reborn, Walter’s Tavern is where locals meet and visitors linger. Come by, settle in, and discover the welcoming spirit that makes Walter’s your new favourite local — right here in the heart of Queenstown.
